What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is the body’s NORMAL reaction to infection and injury. Without inflammation we would not get healing. It is this beautiful balance that makes our bodies amazing. It is characterized by redness, swelling, warmth, and pain. Inflammation is an immune system response that will allow the body to contain and fight infection or repair damaged tissue by dilating the blood vessels and allowing vascular permeability to increase the blood supply to an injured or infected tissue.

While a certain amount of inflammation is essential in fighting disease and healing injuries, what happens when our bodies go out of balance? Too much inflammation or chronic inflammation can actually be debilitating. What happens when the pathway to switch off inflammation is not working? Therefore, as always, a balance must be struck between two natural and opposing forces. One cannot survive without the other.So do we need oils to calm a system that is over-working? Or do we need oils to stimulate a pathway that is being subdued, for example our digestive or detoxification system. This is where your intuition, or your practitioners’ intuition is essential, as we are all different,, and therefore may need different solutions.

Inflammation is the root cause of ALL degenerative disease in the body

  • Inflammation is normally closely regulated by the body as it can lead to a host of diseases such as asthma, allergies, artherosclerosis, osteoporosis, gout, lupus, psoriasis, IBS, Stomach disorders, heart attack, arthritis, diabetes, congestive heart failure, Alzheimer’s disease, chronic bronchitis and more.
  • With inflammatory disease the immune system is usually working perfectly against pathogens (bacteria, virus, fungus), but is actually overworking and destroying healthy tissue rather than pathogens.
  • Once we realize this we stop treating symptoms with unnecessary diets, drugs and surgeries.
  • Whether inflammation is in the arteries as atherosclerosis or in joints as arthritis, or in the digestive tract as ulcerative colitis, or in the lungs as bronchitis and so on…

When assessing inflammation there are two things that are paramount.

One, If there is no direct injury there is always an underlying cause, therefore you must look beyond the site of inflammation, particularly with chronic inflammation (longer than 6 weeks). As 80% of our immune system is in the gut a protocol of oils to heal the gut is paramount when treating an arthritic joint or sinusitis.

Two, is it the body’s inability to shut down inflammation, as in the case of autoimmune disorders? Or are there toxins or pathogens in the body that are driving the inflammatory response?

These are things that are not easily assessed, but a detailed patient history usually uncovers the cause, and is essential if you are not looking for a quick medication “fix” that just treats the symptom. Sometimes further objective laboratory testing may be required to find or confirm a diagnosis and therefore choose the right essential oils to help.

In Conclusion do not treat the disease or the symptom, assess the person in front of you. Underneath everything is inflammation, once you treat, many of your problems miraculously disappear.

Essential Oils & Blends Recommended
• Essential oils have some ability to control inflammation. Studies have indicated that essential oils and plant extracts applied topically can reduce inflammation as much as 45%.
With that understanding the oils and protocols associated with the root cause will be of interest. With this said, there is a broad range of oils recommended for inflammation in general.

For Acute inflammation – In general topical or internal use of the specific oils, is recommended. I have found that a combination of lemon and myrrh, or oregano and myrrh applied topically can be quite soothing to inflamed joints.- INNER TEMPLE

Topical Application – Apply 1-2 drops on location and on the back of the neck by the base of the skull. Add 3-4 drops to 1 Tbs. of coconut oil and massage on location.

• Some essential oils like peppermint, wintergreen, citrus oils, and lavender have analgesic effects, making them beneficial for inflammation and pain.- PAIN EASE, SPINAL CLEANSE, ARTHRITIX, KNEE EASE
For chronic inflammation a foundation of balanced nutrition with oils is essential, as it is usually a much more complicated situation. Always take oils for digestion to correct a chronic inflammation problem, while taking care of the acute symptoms- DIGESTIVEFennel
Calming oils such as STRESS OUT, LET GO, CALMING to soothe the emotional aspect of inflammation.
If you have been diagnosed with hypertension, high cholesterol or cardiovascular disease I suggest CIRCULATION to help inflammation of the arteries.
Oils taken internally for specific application like infection or other stressors in the body- IMMUNE UP
• Essential oils and diet are the two most influential factors for controlling unwanted inflammation. Diet is not a battle to win all at once, but one food at a time. Eliminate one bad and replace it with one good. Add daily core supplementation to include antioxidants, fiber, vitamins and minerals, and probiotics.
• It is our poor diet that stimulates constant inflammation (often wheat). Foods and drink high in acid content create inflammation in the body. One fatty acid in particular, omega 6, generally in meats and processed cooking oils is consumed in much larger quantities than we need.

• This means that even when we do not need an inflammation response (we haven’t been injured or exposed to toxicity or infection) inflammation occurs anyway due to excessive consumption of omega 6 fatty acids. We consume too much junk food, red meats, organ meats, processed meats, soda pop and other unhealthy food. Eat whole, raw, fresh fruits supplementation of core vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber is also of the utmost importance and vegetables.
